Nine ways to cut your energy bill before winter hits
Practical, boring, effective. No gadgets, no gimmicks - just the changes that measurably move the meter.
Energy advice online tends to be either wildly obvious or faintly magical. This is neither.
Start with the standing charge
You cannot avoid it, but you can compare it. Standing charges vary by supplier and region more than most people realise.
Fix or float?
If a fixed tariff sits within about 5% of the current price cap, fixing is usually worth the certainty. Above that, floating tends to win.
The measures that actually pay back
- Draught-proofing doors and floorboards: under £30, pays back in one winter.
- Lowering the flow temperature on a combi boiler to 55C: free, roughly 8% savings.
- Radiator reflector panels on external walls: cheap and quietly effective.
Skip the smart plugs that claim to cut usage. They measure; they do not save.
